Okay. Games.

Which ones do I desperately need to play in order not to be a technological philistine?

Just give me your top ten, and your advice on how I can play 'em cheaply, with minimal investment in equipment.

Find yourself a Game Boy and Tetris on eBay and you will be addicted or months.

That assumes I'm willing to get off the web long enough to play.

Also, I remember Tetris from the 80s. It didn't hold my attention for long, IIRC.

I don't know.... my mom loves tetris. just sayin.

Hmmm. I may be off base, but when I think of AG, I'm thinking "shoot-'em-up" games...And that leads me to "Resident Evil 4," "Half Life," "Killzone," "Time Crisis 2," "True Crime-Streets of LA." Cheapest way to play? Befriend a 12-year old boy. We can trust you. Just having a real woman within six feet will change their lives forever. You can get some used PC-based games at Amazon pretty cheap. Read'em_up to brush up on the different types. see, and other "best" lists for some suggestions.

There's one called 'space invaders' that's all the rage with the kids these days. Or so I've heard.

Posted by: Kevin at August 8, 2006 09:22 AM

Or something like Morrowind.. (Oblivion would require video card/dvd player upgrades.) It's a good FP role playing game that is probably in a lot of bargin bins. System Shock 2 if you can find it... Thief: The Dark Project (again, if you can find it.)

You could always try a game called Kingdom of Drakkar, it's a multiplayer RPG thqat you can DL and play for free, can be a time sink, but it has a lot of good people and is fun to play.

Okay, does everyone know that I have a small handicap in this [cough, Macintosh] arena?

Posted by: Attila Girl at August 9, 2006 08:10 PM

Well, it depends on what you like, I suppose.

Doom 3 is out for the Mac, right? Half-Life 2 is a better FPS and has a better story, but I'm not sure if it has been ported to Mac. Return to Castle Wolfenstein, if available, is also good.

If you're into turn-based strategy, whatever the most recent version of Sid Meier's 'Civilisation' series you can get. More than any other game, this one kept me from sleep.

For real-time strategy, Warcraft (not World of Warcraft) or Starcraft are still outstanding. I also still play Dune 2000, but them I'm a freak. 'Homeworld' is apparently also good.

For MMORPGs, I'd recommend Guild Wars. No monthly subscription fees.

Also, despite - because - it is so cheesy, Freedom Force. Beating evildoers senseless was never so much fun.

About Joy W. McCann: I've been interviewed for Le Monde and mentioned on Fox News. I once did a segment for CNN on "Women and Guns," and this blog is periodically featured on the New York Times' blog list. My writing here has been quoted in California Lawyer. I've appeared on The Glenn and Helen Show. Oh—and Tammy Bruce once bought me breakfast.
My writing has appeared in
The Noise, Handguns, Sports Afield, The American Spectator, and (it's a long story) L.A. Parent. This is my main blog, though I'm also an alumnus of Dean's World, and I help out on the weekends at Right Wing News.
My political philosophy is quite simple: I'm a classical liberal. In our Orwellian times, that makes me a conservative, though one of a decidedly libertarian bent.
