It All Depends on What the Term "Viable" Means in This Context

But given the type of care now available for preemies, I'm skeptical about how the determination was made that the "pre-viable," but delivered fetuses, had no chance of survival outside the womb.

Some versions of the story say "little chance of survival"; others use the phrase "no chance of survival."

There is a difference, and it is at the heart of whether we can call what was going on in Chicago "infanticide."

In any event, factcheck.org concedes that Obama's been lying about the Illinois bill.

Jill Staneck was a nurse at Advocate Christ Hospital in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn that blew the whistle after personally observing hospital doctors and staff leaving babies to die after delivery. She later became an anti-abortion activist as a result of her experiences. I personally can't find any record of anyone being prosecuted on the existing State Statutes. Funny how effective those laws were. If Jill Staneck had taken a tire iron to the heartless bastards on staff that walked out of the room and didn't return until they were sure the babies had died, I am pretty sure she would have been prosecuted. But you can't believe a word she says now because she is an anti-abortion activist, you know. And she sometimes speaks to people's motives--like Barack Obama. How can she know? Yes. We don't know whether he is just an asshole, or if he really supports murder. Or he is just a Spartan at heart.

See, that's the problem. The word "viable" seems to mean whatever is handy.

And the assertion that a doctor thinks that the likelihood of the baby surviving on its own, even with some life-support, is low. Excuse me: low means zero. No chance. Forget it. Won't happen. ("Low chance" means "no chance." Didn't they teach you that in engineering school?)

But we've all see the picture of preemies that are half the size of a man's hand and yet survive, with proper life support.

And we all know that there are a lot of people out there--who do and do not have "M.D." after their names--who believe that any distress or inconvenience to a woman because her baby survives GENUINELY OUTWEIGHS the benefits of keeping that baby alive. The fetus-baby distinction therefore has nothing to do with whether this entity was born: it has to do with whether its mother desired to bear it.

Making abortion the default in our society, rather than "safe, legal, and rare" has indeed turned us into a nation of Spartans.

If legal, safe, and rare means 50 million, we are in real trouble.

I hope for some rare losses for the Democratic Party then.

I heard Barack Obama say that the only decision he regrets during his tenure in the Senate is his vote on the Terri Schiavo matter--interfering in a private matter. Withholding food and water from a human being with a normal life expectancy after a single examination of fact from a Probate Court Judge--a legally blind one at that. Yeah, that was your mistake, Barack. Or the one thing you did right for all the wrong reasons--politics. Glad you set the record straight by declaring your mistake.

And btw, anyone thinking that Jill could have prevented the deaths herself would be sadly mistaken. She would have been dragged from the hospital by security. And she would have never worked in a hospital again. And the police would have talked with the medical staff first and probably left. And I bet she regrets not doing it every second of her life.

In the en, though, bringing that practice out into the open might have saved more lives.

I cannot understand the abortion imperative, in a nation wherein couples are lined up around the block trying to get babies to adopt.

About Joy W. McCann: I've been interviewed for Le Monde and mentioned on Fox News. I once did a segment for CNN on "Women and Guns," and this blog is periodically featured on the New York Times' blog list. My writing here has been quoted in California Lawyer. I've appeared on The Glenn and Helen Show. Oh—and Tammy Bruce once bought me breakfast.
My writing has appeared in
The Noise, Handguns, Sports Afield, The American Spectator, and (it's a long story) L.A. Parent. This is my main blog, though I'm also an alumnus of Dean's World, and I help out on the weekends at Right Wing News.
My political philosophy is quite simple: I'm a classical liberal. In our Orwellian times, that makes me a conservative, though one of a decidedly libertarian bent.
