If We Weren't All So Stupid . . .

we'd be able to appreciate what idiots we are.

Idiot, I'll cop to. Moron, too. And what's wrong with that? Slightly autistic and dyslexic to boot. Ain't we supposed to be 'special needs', and should be 'mainstreamed'?

Ace-on-Nyquil-meltdown-insane?* Slightly. But nothing wrong with that either, now that you can't actually lock up crazy folks in mental institutions until they go and kill someone off first. And crazies vote too, after all. For who, I wouldn't say.

Actually, that's not true in Malaysia - you nuts, off to Tanjung Rambutan** (Peninsular Malaysia) or "7th Mile"*** (Sarawak) with you.

*Catch what my RSS feed just served up (I don't really know how this ended up on my browser - probably a link from somewhere else)

**Now called Hospital Bahagia (Happy Hospital), this is where the nutzo folk are committed. For the thinnest of reasons. Don't want to undertake a glaucoma operation? Off to the mental hospital with you until we're done operating.

*** a mental hospital situated 7 miles from the Kuching GPO, hence the, hm, euphemism.

So if we put the American approach to mental illness together with the Malaysian approach, we might be able to come up with a sane policy.

(Well, maybe more toward the American side: always err on the side of freedom. But here, even psychopathic people don't have to stay locked up, and no one can "force" anyone to take his/her meds. Ever since *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest*--and with the help of the ACLU--we've gone too far. Though a lot of mental hospitals did need reforming. Problem is, we got RID of too many!)

I think part of the problem was that you let lobbying do stuff to the AMA and your healthcare systems.

While I don't support wacko stuff like lobotomies (unless the guy's a serial killer or something, and even then I think just hanging him would be much less cruel), confining the insane is pretty much the best idea ever. Yes, it does tend to remove them from the public eye, and hence you get crazy shit like electroshock therapy (I don't care if it works or not, ain't nobody gonna stick electrodes up my ass and pump 300V into me).

OTOH, I dunno. Maybe it can be difficult to draw the line as to what's mildly eccentric and what's [ahem] moonbat nuts. For example, I speak to myself. Very frequently. How should that be classified?

Hmm. Maybe we should just have a 'reservation' for them? Corral all the crazies, and the greenies and the hobo hippies and put them in a nice, natural, picturesque environment...

...And then sell hunting licenses and day passes to those who practice the AoSHQ Lifestyle(tm).

Of course, that presupposes that the morons are actually able to take on the hobos--maybe, maybe not: some of those hobos are tougher than they look.

I KNOW . . . ;)

About Joy W. McCann: I've been interviewed for Le Monde and mentioned on Fox News. I once did a segment for CNN on "Women and Guns," and this blog is periodically featured on the New York Times' blog list. My writing here has been quoted in California Lawyer. I've appeared on The Glenn and Helen Show. Oh—and Tammy Bruce once bought me breakfast.
My writing has appeared in
The Noise, Handguns, Sports Afield, The American Spectator, and (it's a long story) L.A. Parent. This is my main blog, though I'm also an alumnus of Dean's World, and I help out on the weekends at Right Wing News.
My political philosophy is quite simple: I'm a classical liberal. In our Orwellian times, that makes me a conservative, though one of a decidedly libertarian bent.
