More on that "Face-Carving" Incident: I'm Wrong.

UPDATE: I'm wrong. But at least this woman told the truth, and is facing the music. I hope she serves as an inspiration to Al Sharpton and others like him.

She certainly apologized in a more timely fashion than the Rev. Sharpton did (which is to say, never).

One hopes she will therefore get the treatment she needs. I wish to G-d she had not done what she did, but I'm grateful that she came clean so quickly, and I hope that she can correct the imbalances in her brain that made her mark up her own face.

I am, of course, leaving my post up.

* * *

I happen to believe this young woman, because very few 20-somethings risk scarring their faces just to smear a political opponent. Especially women.

Morrissey is still warning us to keep our powder dry, since there are lunatics in every election—perhaps a few more in this one.

Ace seems genuinely conflicted about this, which I can understand: one of these two people (the mugger or the victim) is out-of-the-ordinary crazy.

My gut tells me she's not making it up, but I could be wrong. And no campaign should be villified because the act of one mentally ill person.

Still, as usual there's a . . . lively . . . debate going on over at AOSHQ.

The Anchoress weighs in, and also presents the definitive roundup on this case:

This story—should the mainstream press deign to report it—could convulse the Obama campaign. So one has to be a little suspicious, if one is to be fair. Yes, I know, the press and the Obama campaign were not skeptical or fair about the (erroneous) reports of a couple of chuckleheads shouting inflammatory things at a rally, but I like to think we’re better and fairer than that—you know, more open-minded and less hateful.

But inflammatory words are very different from physical attacks, and if this story is true, it is at least the second attack on a female McCain supporter within a month—and a disturbing portent of things to come. If the story is not true, this is also disturbing. Either way, this is not good.

My emphasis.

Jimmie at Sundries Shack counters the skeptics on the likelihood that this assault (beyond the mugging, which does not seem to be in question) occurred.

The Anchoress is right: real or fake—neither bodes well for our country's political future.

UPDATE: The way this young woman is handling it at this point is better than I could have expected. I think she must be experiencing some severe mental distress.

But bringing such a tense political campaign into her personal problems—it will take me some time to forgive that.

Thank you for the link and the comment as well.

I don't know that this story is a harbinger for our future any more than the several other incidents of political violence this past month or the slew that happened in the 2004 Election cycle were. It's the way the left does business, politically, going back well past the 1960s.

I have no doubt that we have ANOTHER Tawanna Brawley thing going on here. The "B" is too neat and clean-and WHY would any young woman whose face may possibly be scarred for life(if this really happened) decline medical help? Could it be because that would have offered proof that this incident didn't happen????? If I was going to attack someone at an ATM machine, I'd have gone for her $$$, NOT her face! Besides, all ATMs have cameras-IF she was attacked, it would have at least shown SOME of that attack. Just goes to show that some people will do anything......this young lady needs to be seen by a psychiatrist, at the very least!

Look at the scar. It's a backward B. That would happen if you were looking in a mirror to carve your own face. Just sayin'.

Police: Campaign Worker Admits Making Up Story

Posted by: Taylor at October 24, 2008 09:45 AM

Come on, you think this is real because you believe "a 20 something woman" wouldn't carve their own face? That's your emotion getting in the way of thinking, I wish I had your fairytale thinking, but I live in the real world. You have no idea what people will do for attention, just look up Tawana Brawley or Paul Mirecki.

First of all the B is backwards, she obviously carved it in her own face in a mirror. She said the man sat on her arms and chest, so he was not straddling her backwards like some people like to say.

Not to mention the wound is perfect, would you let someone carve two perfectly rounded corners on your face without moving at all? There would be other cuts on her face or ANYWHERE from the struggle. It would not be perfect all the way around.

Why would the mugger stick around and risk getting caught just to make a political point (literally). Also if he's so patient to stick around and try to sway her vote, why didn't he have her take more money out of the ATM?

Also the mugging IS in question because police are now giving her a polygraph and there is no evidence of the attack on the ATM video, she also changed her story to say she was sexually assaulted and that now the guy didn't take her money?

Also, (as if that's not enough to show its a hoax) locals to that area have said that it's not a bad area of town at all and there are many window shopping centers and coffee shops around the location, basically the attack would have been noticed by people in the area.

Then she doesn't report it for a day, says she doesn't know the area but went to her friends house near by right after the attack then BACK to the ATM to report it. Huh?

Have you ever seen a real black eye? Just google it for christs sake. Real black eyes have swelling and her eye (the left one) would not be so white, also black eye's don't look like that in a day. This girl just looks like she slapped some make-up on which would explain why she sought no medical attention after the attack, there is no injury to attend to.

Also the police didn't take that photo, yet it's all over the internet and TV, so you're really just helping to spread her fake propaganda by posting it. Oops.

This one smells all over. I also don't agree that real or fake it does not bode well for our political future, what does not bode well is people who believe this trife and spread these lies without even investigating the story, this one is not hard to figure out at all.

"My gut tells me she's not making it up" Well stop thinking with your GUT and start thinking with your BRAIN.

LOL AS I WAS TYPING THIS RESPONSE MSNBC JUST REPORTED IT IS A HOAX.

Well, I was wrong.

And I get black eyes all the time--usually getting in and out of my car, but also trying to get things off of shelves and stuff like that. I'm way clumsy.

Once in a while the dog will jump up on our laps with something hard--like this hard-plastic toy she likes--in her mouth, and then one of us (usually my mom) will get a black eye.

They don't look too bad the first day or two. After that, they really start to "blossom," and not amount of makeup will cover 'em up. There's something fascinating about the fact that they look so innocuous the first day, and then look worse and worse and worse as the week wears on. Then they go away.

But I was wrong about this, of course. Because when I was young I did cut myself once, on purpose. But I was never tempted to cut my face, even though I don't look like a model--not by any stretch. Not even remotely. I just couldn't imagine any young woman, no matter how troubled, risking a scar on her face to make a political point.

But it sounds like this wasn't about politics, particularly: just someone who needs better mental treatment than she is getting. It's just fucked-up that she blamed this on an Obama supporter when tensions are already so high in this election.

Michelle Malkin was right, and I was wrong. So I got that going for me.

Oh, by the way: you say that you're black. What makes you "scary"? Do you have a police record or something? Did you serve time in prison? Just curious. I once worked with a black guy who had served time in prison, and he was the sweetest man--terribly open about the fact that he'd done time.

I remember asking him about that infamous self-segregation in prisons, and he said that didn't apply to "the Christian table." The Christian table was integrated, and they of course never went out of their way to provoke fights. They had to show that they would defend themselves, of course, once in a while, but mostly this tiny minority managed to be left alone--an island of integration in a sea of white, black, and Latino separatists.

I liked that.

Apparently, she worked the Ron Paul campaign, too.

"In March, Ms. Todd was asked to leave a grass-roots group of Ron Paul supporters in Brazos County, Texas, group leader Dustan Costine said. He said Ms. Todd posed as a supporter of former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and called the local Republican committee seeking information about its campaign strategies.

"She would call the opposing campaign and pretend she was on their campaign to get information," Mr. Costine said last night. "We had to remove her because of the tactics she displayed. After that we had nothing to do with her."

About a month earlier, he said, Ms. Todd sent an e-mail to the Ron Paul group saying her tires were slashed and that campaign paraphernalia had been stolen from her car because she supported Mr. Paul.

"She's the type of person who wants to be recognized," Mr. Costine said."

About Joy W. McCann: I've been interviewed for Le Monde and mentioned on Fox News. I once did a segment for CNN on "Women and Guns," and this blog is periodically featured on the New York Times' blog list. My writing here has been quoted in California Lawyer. My political philosophy is quite simple: I'm a classical liberal. In our Orwellian times, that makes me a conservative, though one of a decidedly libertarian bent.
